Week 7

Beetles are my favorite little creatures (although some not so small). Their design is amazing and the wide range of species is also fascinating… what can I say, I love beetles.

Here’s a fun variation of the first bug of the week that I did in November 2022:

And here is a little of the process of creation of the beetle species that throws children into the air to make them laugh:

Life is too short not to get a good laughs time to time… this beetle knows it.

Week 6

At some point in October 2022, I went to the Museum of Natural History here in NY just to see an exhibition of Levon Biss’s work, He is a photographer who captures images of insects in stunning detail. Among many of his great photos, was one of a Brazilian beetle that appeared to have flames painted on its back.

If you google it, you’ll probably see something slightly different, after that exposure my brain decided that what I remembered was something like this:

Week 5

I have tried to be consistent with this exercise, but sometimes Sundays have caught me in the middle of a trip or with some activity. In this particular case, it was an advantage. Killing time drawing an Acorn Weevil on a flight back to NYC turned out to be a good way to entertain myself.

Here’s the digital variation:

Week 4

This was a wild one. When I first saw the caterpillar of the Brahmin moth, I was very surprised. I mean, when you see a thing with horn-like structures on its back, you might think of an aggressive monster or something. But what if these buddies are cute and friendly animals? In real life, it may be a survival method, but since I’m not serious… here’s a fun variation:

And for those curious of my process, I also took some stills of the process of this week sketch:

Bug of the Week: day-1

The first sketch I did was a bee on September 26, 2022. I was imagining something like an airport bee-port with workers helping to safe landing the bee. Here’s some of the digital versions I did for it:

Drawing of a giant bee, landing in a designated area while being guided by tiny men

In general, one of the things I enjoyed the most were the human figures. After my original sketch of a top and side view of a bee, my idea in digital was to show it like in a landing area, can you imagine if they were the size of a helicopter? HA! I would love to work there, or maybe not if they turn out to be carnivorous… 😂
